Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
