Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
